DAVAO CITY — An existing airport named after former First Lady Imelda Marcos in Mati, Davao Oriental will soon undergo major rehabilitation and expansion to serve as another important gateway for business and tourism in this part of Mindanao.

According to the Mati Information Office, the Mati airport development project will upgrade the airport’s current facilities to cater to increasing passenger demand in the region and further boost the region’s connectivity to national and international destinations.

The P87-billion project includes the construction of a modern passenger terminal building featuring pre-departure and arrival and arrival lounges; check-in areas, concessionaire spaces, security zones and spacious parking facility for vehicles; and improved accessibility for passengers.

It also includes the upgrading of the airport’s existing runways and taxiways to accommodate larger aircraft, ensuring safe and efficient operations, with dedicated areas for ground service equipment and fire station facilities for operational readiness.

Mati airport, originally named Imelda Marcos Airport, was built in 1976 during the administration of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., father of President Bongbong Marcos.

Following the ouster and downfall of Marcos Sr., however, the airport has remained “underutilized and undeveloped for decades,” serving only as a secondary facility in the Davao region, according to the MIO.

Mati City Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat welcomed the new project.

Bullion hit an all-time high of $2,704.89 in early Asian trade, up from its previous record of $2,688.83 touched on Thursday.

Ajay Banga spoke to Agence France-Presse at the development lender’s headquarters in Washington ahead of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, which begin on Monday, October 21.

“The upgraded airport will not only provide a seamless travel experience for passengers but also position Mati City as a gateway to economic growth and tourism in Mindanao,” said Rabat.

The airport project, which is set to break ground some time next month, is also seen as a boost to the local economy and tourism in the region.

“With improved airport facilities, Davao Oriental can expect an influx of domestic and international visitors eager to explore the region’s stunning attractions, such as the Dahican Beach, Mount Hamiguitan and Pujada Bay,” said the MIO.

Based on the detailed project plans, the new Mati airport terminal will showcase a contemporary architectural design inspired by local culture and combine functionality with aesthetic appeal. The airport’s environmentally-friendly landscaping also promotes sustainability and creates a welcoming atmosphere for travelers.
