One dead body has been recovered from the collapsed coal mine at 3 Kilo, Umrangso, where nine miners were trapped on January 6.

Rescue teams recovered the body of a miner, who was among the nine trapped in a collapsed mine in Assam.

This was confirmed in a statement by NDRF on Wednesday morning. 

The joint rescue operation led by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other agencies resumed early in the morning to rescue trapped miners in a coal mine.

Assam Chief Minister Statement

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X, "21 para divers have just recovered a lifeless body from the bottom of the well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family."

"The rescue operation is in full swing, with Army and NDRF divers having already entered the well. Navy personnel are on-site, making final preparations to dive in after them. Meanwhile, SDRF de-watering pumps have departed from Umrangshu for the location. Additionally, the ONGC de-watering pump has been loaded onto an MI-17 helicopter at Kumbhigram, awaiting weather clearence for deployment." Sarma added.

NDRF Statement

NDRF Deputy Commandant N. Tiwari said, "The operation was closed yesterday evening, and we have resumed the operation again this morning. We expect to reach our miners as soon as possible and rescue them," as quoted by News Agency ANI.

Diving Teams Are On Spot

The Eastern Naval Command has been airlifted & deployed from Visakhapatnam for the search and rescue operations for trapped miners at the 3 Kilo Assam Quarry Mine, Umrangso, Dima Hasao, Assam. The rescue effort is being conducted in close coordination with the Indian Army, NDRF, and the local civil administration to ensure an immediate & effective response.

Meanwhile, in January last year, a fire in a coal mine in Nagaland's Wokha district had left six workers dead. Four others were also injured. In May of the same year, a mine in Assam’s Tinsukia district caved in, killing three miners. Then in September 2022, three coal miners got killed by inhaling suspected toxic gas in the same district.

Six teams, namely India, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Japan and China are participating in the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 and the hosts are the lowest-ranked (23) team in the tournament. India's next opponent, Japan are ranked 15 in the world.

The biggest tragedy in recent memory was the death of 15 miners in a flooded rat-hole coal mine in Meghalaya’s Ksan area on December 13777pub, 2018.
